My paper, DigBoston, and the Boston Phoenix have been rival alt-weeklies since 1999—the year the Dig started printing. At times, this competition between the two papers (for exclusives, for advertising, for events, for what the fuck ever) has gotten downright nasty. Now, as WFNX, the Phoenix Media Group’s radio station, is getting bought out by a corporate conglomerate and their staff is getting laid off as I type this, some things just become more important.

I’m grateful to work for an awesome company that supports my writing, and I’m grateful to live in Boston and be a part of a fantastic, supportive community. That’s all.

“In the H0od” jokes aside, New England’s leading dairy brand Hood, HQed in Lynnfield, is introducing new ice cream flavors and products to get Bostonians and New Englanders in general even more pumped full o’ excitement and calcium.

New flavors include additions to their Hood Classic line, Peanut Butter Cup and Butter Pecan flavors, and ice cream sandwiches such as Chocolate and Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwiches (¿Porque no los dos?) and Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream Sandwiches.

Adding these to my grocery list.

Elaine Hsieh and Catharine Sweeney met when a mutual friend asked them to make her wedding cake, even though neither had ever made one before and they didn’t know each other. They found that they liked working together and that they enjoyed working with food, so several years later, Hsieh and Sweeney decided to go into business together making chocolates.

Before taking the plunge, they started a chocolate club where they created chocolates and mailed them to testers to see which flavors people liked most and to iron out the logistical aspects of the business. Read More…
